I went in to the dealership to purchase a car. When drawing up the paperwork, they had over $4,000 in add-ons. I refused them all, but they said I couldn't refuse them because these had already been added to the car and it would be too difficult, if not impossible to remove them. I asked to look at the add-ons and told them that they could definitely remove almost all of them with little labor. They brought down the mark-ups from $4,000 to $799. They said they could not remove the last add-on because it was a VIN number etched into the catalytic converter to help identify it if it was stolen. They also said the warranty wouldn't cover it if it wasn't etched in. Finally, they said I had to sign a waiver for the etching. What they didn't tell me was that California law requires all dealerships to etch the VIN number into the catalytic converters of all new and used vehicles that they are selling. They also didn't tell me that the same law says they are not allowed to pass on the cost of that etching onto the consumer. I had to look up this information while waiting for the rep to attend to other customers. While waiting, I found that a DIY etching kit for catalytic converters only costs $25 at the auto parts store. When I pointed all of this out to them, they took back the deal and refused to sell the car to me.
